The scanner stays on the seat instead of hanging under the steering wheel: the extension brings the OBD-II port within reach and spares the pins of the car’s own port, plugged and unplugged at every diagnosis. A one-metre flat cable that runs under a mat or along a trim, a 16-pin male plug on the car side and a 16-pin female socket on the tool side: a standalone scanner, an ELM327 interface or a code reader plugs into it as it would into the original port.
